On 25 September, the Vice-Minister Audra Plepytė participated in the commemoration of the National Memorial Day for the Genocide of the Lithuanian Jews in Paneriai, paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and honoring their memory.
The Vice-Minister, together with top state officials, heads of various Lithuanian institutions, members of the Jewish community, members of the public, and members of the diplomatic corps residing in our country, laid flowers at the Paneriai Memorial and observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
The Day of Remembrance of the Genocide of Lithuanian Jews is observed every year in Lithuania on September 23. On that day, in 1943, the Nazi occupation authorities liquidated the Vilna Ghetto and murdered most of the Jews imprisoned in the Ghetto in the Paneriai forest. During the worst tragedy of the 20th century - the Holocaust - Lithuania lost around 190,000 Jews, fellow citizens who, together with other nationalities living in Lithuania, contributed to the building of the State of Lithuania.
