Ascension Saint Alexius earns top rating from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Ascension Illinois is excited to announce that Ascension Saint Alexius in Hoffman Estates has earned a five-star overall hospital rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings are derived from 46 publicly reported quality measures across five quality domains: Mortality, Patient Experience, Readmission, Safety of Care, and Timely and Effective Care. These quality measures are aggregated and a single composite star rating is assigned by CMS for each hospital, with five stars indicating the highest level of hospital performance.

Saint Alexius is one of just 14 hospitals in the state to have earned a five-star score for CMS' May 2026 grades.

Last year, CMS reported a star score for 2,891 U.S. hospitals with the national average star rating decreasing from 3.13 stars in 2024 to 3.08 stars.

Performance rankings like these provide an objective measure of a health system's ability to deliver consistent high-performing care across the communities they serve. In addition to this accolade, Saint Alexius earned a recognition from the American Heart Association for its continued efforts in improving cardiac and stroke care, a "high-performing" distinction from U.S. News & World Report for its treatment of knee replacement and heart failure, a spot on Forbes' inaugural list of the nation's top hospitals for 2026, and a Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award as one of the best hospitals in Illinois for patient safety.
