Our Schools Our Democracy (OSOD) is a Texas-based nonpartisan nonprofit that uses research, education, outreach, and advocacy to fight growing efforts to privatize Texas public schools and to protect the fundamental rights of all Texans to a free, public education. As part of this mission, OSOD is launching the Texas Center for Voucher Transparency (TXCVT) on February 2, 2026 - the same week that Texas will begin accepting parent applications for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) voucher program.
The week of action is part of the next phase of the fight for our public schools. TXCVT will use a team of researchers and data analysts to inform the public and the legislature about the Texas voucher scheme and will provide resources for community members to call on state lawmakers to put transparency first, protect taxpayer dollars, and ensure fairness for public school students.
Led by TXCVT Director Dee Carney, a distinguished public education policy expert and a former middle school math teacher, TXCVT will promote transparency and public accountability - ensuring that privately-operated schools meet the same standards of financial and academic accountability that public schools already face.
Last year, Texas lawmakers directed $1 billion of taxpayer dollars towards private schools vouchers, with potential costs estimated at $4.7 billion by 2030 if lawmakers raise the spending cap. TXCVT's work is timely and necessary because the voucher law requires no legislative report about the program for at least five years, meaning the legislature could add more state dollars to the voucher scheme before even seeing a report about the program's performance.
