EDMONTON - Arnav Gugnani, a graduate of the Canadian Coast Guard Academy's Engineering Officer training program Class of 2026, is preparing to begin his career with the Canadian Coast Guard.
Gugnani, who grew up in Southwest Edmonton, will be posted to St. John's, NL, for his first assignment. He said he is looking forward to applying what he has learned over the past four years and beginning his professional life in service of Canadians.
"I'm excited to finally get my footing as an adult and start giving back to the country and the people who gave so much to my family," he said.
Gugnani immigrated to Canada from India in 2014 with his parents, Sarita and Amit, who left behind their careers, extended family, and community to start over with just four suitcases. He credits their resilience and sacrifices with making his own achievements possible.
"Canada welcomed us and gave us so much," he said. "Serving with the Canadian Coast Guard felt like the best way to give back."
A former honour roll student at Harry Ainlay High School in Edmonton, Gugnani first considered joining the Canadian Coast Guard after his father suggested the idea in the years leading up to his graduation. He later applied for, and was accepted into, the Academy's Engineering Officer training program.
"The Academy tested every part of me," he said. "Despite the challenges, the experience helped me mature and better prepare for life beyond the classroom, allowing me to build new relationships while gaining practical sea-going experience."
Looking ahead to his posting in Newfoundland, Gugnani said he is eager to continue learning and contribute to the Canadian Coast Guard's work. There, he will support the fleet in ensuring safe navigation, search and rescue, and response to marine pollution on the East coast and the Arctic.
"If I had the chance," he said, "I would do it all over again."
