Is Carnival Stock Increasing Your Market Risk

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Investors who hold Carnival Corporation (CCL), the operator of Carnival Cruise Line, Princess, AIDA and Costa, typically keep the rest of their money in funds tracking the S&P 500. Any individual stock added to those funds moves with the broader market on good and bad days, either amplifying or softening the portfolio's swings. So when the S&P 500 rises or falls, how far does Carnival move your money?

Carnival Stock Moves Roughly Double The Market

Carnival moves your money roughly twice as far as the market, adding to the market risk you already hold. Over the twelve months to October 30, 2026, the S&P 500 rose 0.633% on an average up day, while a $10,000 holding in Carnival gained about $125. On an average down day, the index fell 0.61%, and that same holding lost about $125.

Carnival's swings are wider over the whole year as well. Its volatility, a measure of how widely daily moves spread, was 49.5% over the past year, compared with 12.8% for the index. For each 1% the S&P 500 moved, Carnival stock moved about 2.15% on average. That figure is calculated differently from the up-day and down-day averages above, so the two do not perfectly match. As a result, Carnival fails to steady a portfolio built on the market, instead making the market's moves bigger in both directions.

Will Carnival Stock Keep Swinging This Much?

The stock will probably continue to swing this much, even though Carnival's finances are steadier than they were. Management said on the September 29, 2026 call that total debt is now below $24 billion, down from a $36 billion peak in 2023, and that a second rating agency now rates the company investment grade.

Even so, Carnival's total debt equals 64% of its market value, against 19.1% for the S&P 500. Fuel is a large cost outside the company's control: higher fuel prices took $0.11 a share off its full-year earnings guide, and management said it cannot count on fuel prices to cooperate. Gains elsewhere more than made up for it, and the full-year adjusted earnings guide still rose $0.02 to $2.24 a share. Bookings are steadier, and management said 2027 is already half booked at record occupancy and pricing.

Over the past year, Carnival's daily moves tracked the index's moves only partly, recording a correlation of 0.56 on a scale where 1 means the two move in perfect step. A company carrying that much debt and a large cost outside its control is likely to keep swinging more than the market, even as its bookings fill.

Has Carnival Stock Paid You For Its Swings?

Not over the long run. In the five years to October 30, 2026, Carnival stock returned 5.7% a year including dividends, against 12.1% a year for the S&P 500. Its annual volatility over those same five years was 55.2%, against 17.0% for the index.

Dividing the yearly return by the volatility shows how much return each unit of swing has earned: 0.103 for Carnival over those five years, against 0.712 for the S&P 500. By that measure, Carnival's swings have paid investors far less than the market's.

If the pattern of the past year holds, a Carnival holding will tend to add more to your money than an equal sum in an index fund on the market's up days, and take more away on its down days. For investors who already hold other bets on people spending on travel, such as hotel or airline stocks, Carnival piles more of that same risk on top. You are paid for carrying that risk only if Carnival earns as much return for each unit of swing as the market does.
