From Trauma to Hope: Supporting Mental Health in Ukraine

As the war in Ukraine continues, access to mental health care remains critical for people living with the psychological effects of the conflict, including the healthcare workers serving affected communities.

"You can see the sad eyes. You can feel the pain that they're living through," said Iryna Gudyma, head of Razom with You. But Gudyma also sees signs of recovery, describing how participants begin transforming their pain into action.

"It's very beautiful to see that post-traumatic growth," she said.

Direct Relief has awarded more than $2.2 million to Razom in support of Razom with You (Razom z Toboyu), a program providing free psychological support to Ukrainians affected by the war. The funding includes a $550,000 grant in early 2023, nearly $1.1 million in early 2025, and approximately $600,000 in April 2026. Razom with You has provided more than 19,500 mental health care sessions, according to the organization.

The first two grants supported psychological services for the general population. The most recent award expanded the program to include dedicated mental health and psychosocial support for healthcare providers.

The expanded effort addresses the psychological needs of both war-affected communities and the medical professionals who continue caring for them amid the ongoing conflict.

Direct Relief has provided more than $2.5 billion in humanitarian support in response to the war in Ukraine since Feb. 2022.
