Please Read Below Regarding Placement of Mailboxes

In Maine, your mailbox should be at least 1 foot back from the edge of the normally plowed shoulder or curb, but MaineDOT encourages more distance (2+ feet) for safety and easier plow clearance, ideally placing the mailbox further off the road to prevent damage during winter, with a height of 41-45 inches from the road surface to the bottom of the box.

Key Distances:

From Road Edge/Curb: At least 12 inches (1 foot) back from the plowing edge or curb face.

Encouraged Offset: More distance is better (2+ feet) to keep it out of the plow's path and avoid damage.

Height: 41 to 45 inches from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox.

Why This Matters:

Plow Damage: Placing it too close risks damage from plows, and owners are responsible for repairs.

Mail Carrier Safety: Proper placement allows carriers to reach mail safely without leaving their vehicle.
