Flash Flooding Impacting Marion Area; Several Parks and Trails Closed Due to Flooding

City crews are responding to heavy rains and flash flooding that occurred overnight, following a week of accumulating precipitation. Many detention basins and waterways that are normally dry are functioning as intended.

Crews have deployed pumps in low-lying areas at 10^th Street and Brockman Avenue, Northview Drive and 12^th Avenue, 2^nd Avenue and 12^th Street, 2^nd Avenue and 14^th Street and 11^th Street and 27^th Avenue to help relieve pressure on the system.

With over 4.7 inches of rain falling in Marion from Sept. 19 until 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 20, Indian Creek has overflowed its banks, and several parks within the watershed are underwater.

The following parks are currently closed:

• Thomas Park, 343 Marion Boulevard
• Prairie Hill Park, 5133 29th Avenue
• Boyson Park, 975 Boyson Road

The CeMar Trail, Boyson Trail and Indian Creek Trail are all closed, along with the trailheads at Parkview Drive and Hanna Park.

The public is reminded not to drive or walk through standing or running water or drive around barricades. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet, and most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
