KC Opens Applications for Major Event Short-Term Rentals

Kansas City is now accepting applications for Major Event Short-Term Rental Registration, allowing residents to operate short-term rentals for a reduced duration during the city's busiest event period at a significantly reduced cost.

Eligible hosts may register for a $50 limited-term permit, compared to the standard $200 annual fee. This special registration authorizes short-term rental operations from May 3 through July 31, 2026, the maximum 90-day period allowed under city regulations, and applies only during the declared Major Event timeframe.

Important Tax Obligations for Short-Term Rentals

  1. Transient Guest Tax:
    A tax of 7.5% applies to the gross receipts from sales or charges paid by guests for sleeping rooms, furnishings, and related services.
  2. Occupancy Fee:
    An occupancy fee of $3.00 per rental night must also be collected.
  3. Payment & Filing:
    Taxes and fees must be remitted quarterly using Form RD-306 through the City's online tax portal: Quick Tax.
  4. Earnings Tax Profits Account:
    A 1% tax on net profit earned from the rental property must be filed by the federal tax deadline (generally April 15).

Please note that booking platforms DO NOT withhold Kansas City STR taxes. Owners and operators must collect and remit taxes directly to the City.

Business License Registration

New short-term rental businesses must register their property with the Kansas City Business License Office using Form RD-100 - Registration Application.

This form can be submitted electronically at kcmo.gov/quicktax or in person at City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., 1st Floor, Kansas City, MO.
