Preparations for Pope Leo XIV's visit to Poland

On 5 August, Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski met with the President of the Polish Bishops' Conference, Metropolitan Archbishop of Gdańsk Tadeusz Wojda, SAC. The discussions concerned the start of preparations for Pope Leo XIV's first pilgrimage to Poland.
The papal visit is an event which will be organised jointly by the government and the Church. Formal invitations to Poland have been sent to Pope Leo XIV by both the state-for the Republic of Poland by Presidents Andrzej Duda and Karol Nawrocki, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk-and the Church, represented by the Presidium of the Polish Bishops' Conference.
Due to the international nature of the Holy Father's visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take on a coordinating role in the government's preparations.
The date of the pilgrimage is not yet known. Once a date has been set, a team for the organisation of the pilgrimage will be appointed, comprising representatives from relevant Church and state entities.

To date, Poland has been visited by three popes, a total of 11 times. Pope John Paul II visited the country nine times (in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2002), while Pope Benedict XVI visited Poland in 2006. Pope Francis visited our country during World Youth Day in 2016.
