News Release

Oct. 30, 2025 - Northwestern Colorado - A smoother surface offers safer driving

Grand County - The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with United Companies, completed the resurfacing project on US Highway 40 in Winter Park. The project improved approximately four miles of US 40 from Vasquez Road (Mile Point 229) to Winter Park Drive (MP 233). The project began May 12 and was completed on Oct. 15, 2025.

"These improvements were identified by both CDOT and the Winter Park community as priority needs, and we are proud to see this significant project completed. The US 40 Winter Park resurfacing project enhances safety, improves mobility for residents and visitors, and strengthens vital connections throughout our mountain region," said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. "By improving the condition of the roadway, we are also enhancing the quality of life for commuters, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Projects such as this demonstrate CDOT's continued commitment to maintaining and modernizing Colorado's transportation infrastructure in close collaboration with our community partners."

Work included milling old asphalt, paving with new asphalt, guardrail replacement and removing and installing Americans with Disabilities Act ramps on US 40 at Blaze Resorts, Village Drive, Old Town Drive and Winter Park Drive. Additional work consisted of bridge joint repairs on US 40 at MP 224, in the community of Tabernash.

The new asphalt will add years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and will add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage. The new guardrail is 31 inches high, designed to meet new safety standard requirements. The higher railing will help veering vehicles remain on the road more effectively, making the highway safer for the traveling public.

Other benefits of the project included the installation of four ADA compliant curb ramps at three locations. The new ramps were constructed in compliance with the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines requirements and will provide functional accessibility for our multi-modal users.

This is a separate project but part of a series of roadwork projects that have taken place along US 40 to ensure safer and smoother roadway with an extended lifespan.
