Justice Facility Dog Program marks five years of support

  • Program has delivered proven results to Perth Children's Court users
  • Initiative has expanded to include four dogs
  • Service is now well-known and a valued part of court experience

This year marks five years of the Justice Facility Dog Program at Perth Children's Court, where specially trained dogs help support vulnerable court users, including victims of crime, witnesses, and their caregivers.

Delivered in partnership with Guide Dogs WA, the program has grown from one pioneering dog, Winston, to four Justice Facility Dogs - Velvet, Red, Perron, and Millie.

Carefully selected for their calm and gentle temperament, the dogs provide comfort and reassurance to children, young people, and families navigating the justice system.

They attend Perth Children's Court four days a week for up to one and a half hours a time with a trained handler.

Research by Edith Cowan University has found the dogs contribute to a more positive court environment, with court users reporting reduced stress and anxiety.

Although Winston retired last year after four years of dedicated service, his legacy continues through the current team of facility dogs, which are playing an important role in encouraging communication, participation, and engagement in court proceedings.

Comments attributed to Attorney General Dr Tony Buti:

"For many children and families, attending court can be an overwhelming experience. These remarkable dogs provide comfort and reassurance when it is needed most, helping to create a calmer and more supportive atmosphere.

"We know that when people feel less stressed and anxious, they are better able to participate in court proceedings, communicate effectively, and engage with the process.

"Over the past five years, the program has become a valued part of the Perth Children's Court experience, and I thank everyone who has contributed to its success, including Children's Court President His Honour Judge Hylton Quail for his ongoing support.

"I also acknowledge Guide Dogs WA and the dedicated handlers whose commitment and expertise have helped make this initiative such a lasting success."
