The County has officially joined the City in negotiations with the United Soccer League to explore a potential soccer stadium and entertainment district at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds or other County-owned sites within Santa Rosa city limits.
The City of Santa Rosa welcomes the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors' decision to join negotiations with the United Soccer League (USL) to evaluate County-owned sites within Santa Rosa city limits for a potential multi-purpose stadium and possible sports or mixed-use entertainment district. This step strengthens regional collaboration as the City, County and the Fair Board partner together to explore bringing professional men's and women's soccer to Santa Rosa.
Earlier this year, the City signed its own Letter of Intent with USL, the nation's largest professional soccer organization, to begin an exclusive negotiating process. This agreement remains in effect, and both the City and USL continue to evaluate opportunities within Santa Rosa's boundaries. The action by the County mirrors the City's agreement and allows USL to conduct site studies, test design concepts, and assess financial feasibility on county owned facilities through September 17, 2026. While neither agreement commits public funds for construction, both create a framework for transparent evaluation and community engagement.
USL has expressed strong interest in Santa Rosa as an expansion market, citing our growing population, vibrant economy, and high youth soccer participation. Following a preliminary site review by USL and City staff, the Sonoma County Fairgrounds emerged as one possible location for a stadium that could accommodate at least 5,000 spectators. Other sites are also under review. To limit public subsidies, USL anticipates proposing a mixed-use entertainment district featuring housing, retail, and other amenities. Feasibility studies are expected to conclude by late summer 2026.
The City remains committed to ensuring this process reflects community priorities. Public engagement sessions will begin in early 2026, providing opportunities for residents, businesses, labor groups, and the soccer community to share input on what they would like to see in a potential sports and entertainment complex. The City will also be working jointly with the County and Fair Board on engagement opportunities and participation will be open to residents countywide.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Santa Rosa and the entire region," said Mayor Mark Stapp. "A project of this scale could bring new energy to the Fairgrounds, create jobs, and enhance quality of life, but it must be shaped by community voices every step of the way."
