Key Takeaways:
After years of rigorous education and surgical practice, an OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center surgeon has achieved a major career milestone. Rebekah S. Wever, MD, was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, recognizing her commitment to excellence in the field of surgery.
Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons is granted to surgeons who meet established academic and practice requirements and agree to uphold the organization's professional and ethical standards. The application process includes an evaluation of the surgeon's education, training, and surgical practice by peers. Dr. Wever was formally inducted on September 26 at Clinical Congress in Washington D.C.
"Earning Fellowship is incredibly meaningful because it reflects the high standards of care surgeons are expected to provide throughout their careers," said Dr. Wever. "It was especially rewarding to have my family there, along with Dr. Michael Sarap, who has been a longtime mentor and has supported me throughout my career."
Dr. Wever joined the medical staff at SMC in 2024 after completing her general surgery residency at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and completed her undergraduate education at Marietta College.
As part of the general surgery team, Dr. Wever provides a wide range of surgical care. She has a particular interest in hernia care and complex abdominal wall reconstruction, as well as breast surgery. She has also expanded access to laparoscopic colon surgery at SMC. All members of SMC's general surgery team have now earned Fellowship from the ACS.
Dr. Wever is accepting new patients out of both OhioHealth General Surgery Physicians office locations in Cambridge and Caldwell. To learn more or schedule an appointment, call (740) 432-5685.
