Newsweek Ranks Bowie State University Among Best Colleges for Women in the Nation

(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State University has been named to Newsweek and Gender Fair's America's Best Colleges for Women 2026 list, ranking No. 6 in Maryland and No. 175 nationally among 751 U.S. colleges. The ranking evaluates colleges using federally reported data across four categories tied to women's success: leadership, pay and policies, safety and opportunity.

"Women contribute meaningfully across every area of the university, and this designation affirms Bowie State's enduring commitment to women's success," said Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, president of Bowie State University. "Through strong leadership, robust academic and athletic programs, and intentional support networks, the university creates pathways for women to thrive and lead in their careers, communities and beyond."

As Maryland's first Historically Black College/University (HBCU), Bowie State has a longstanding history of expanding access to higher education while delivering affordable, high-quality academic programs. The university offers women-centered student organizations that promote mentorship, advocacy and professional growth, including Women in Premed and Women in Computer Science. Academic, leadership and co-curricular opportunities ensure women are supported holistically and prepared to excel in a rapidly evolving global workforce.

"Bowie State University gave me far more than an education - it instilled in me the confidence to lead and the assurance that my voice has value," said Deidre Mathis '13, a Bowie State M.A. in Organizational Communications graduate and hospitality entrepreneur. "I was nurtured in an environment that celebrated innovation, leadership and purpose. That experience continues to shape my journey as I build businesses, create opportunities and serve my community."

The university's commitment to women is also evident through championship-caliber athletics, with nationally competitive programs in basketball, bowling, softball, volleyball, tennis, track & field and cross country, highlighted by multiple CIAA titles, NCAA Tournament appearances and elite student-athlete recognition. The university also launched an inaugural golf program in 2025-26, marked by Whitley Shield's historic participation as the only woman on the Bulldogs' golf team and one of the few women competing in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
