Sen. Jason T. Dickerson Introduces Legislation to Cap Cherokee County School District Property Tax Assessments

ATLANTA (January 20, 2026) - Last week, Sen. Jason T. Dickerson (R-Canton) introduced Senate Bill 407 to set a cap on property tax assessments in Cherokee County at no more than a four percent annual increase. If a home's assessed value rises by more than four percent, the excess amount will be exempt from school district ad valorem taxes.

"As Cherokee County continues to grow, so do our property taxes," said Sen. Dickerson. "Our community is having more difficulty keeping what they earn, and homeowners deserve to be protected from sudden tax spikes if home values skyrocket. I have lived in Cherokee County my entire life and believe that hardworking citizens should be able to afford the places they call home, both today and long-term. SB 407 will bring predictability to the school property tax system, create a friendlier housing environment and support a more affordable quality of life in Cherokee County."

Senate Bill 407 was assigned to the Senate Committee on State and Local Governmental Operations, where it awaits further action. The legislation was co-sponsored by Senators John Albers (R-Roswell) and Kay Kirkpatrick (R-Marietta), whose districts also include portions of Cherokee County.
