Cortez Masto Honors Police Week, Advances Legislation to Support Law Enforcement

Washington, D.C. - During National Police Week, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) gave a speech on the Senate floor to honor Nevada law enforcement and highlight her work to support public safety. This week, Congress advanced her bills to combat organized retail crime, support Tribal public safety, and posthumously honor fallen law enforcement officers.

"For me, supporting law enforcement is personal. My husband is a retired law enforcement officer," said Senator Cortez Masto on the Senate floor. "And I have seen firsthand the sacrifices our officers and their families make so our families feel safe at home. That's why I've worked with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to champion legislation to support police officers across the country."

Progress was made on several of Senator Cortez Masto's bipartisan bills to support law enforcement this week:

  • On Monday, the Senate unanimously passed Senator Cortez Masto's Medal of Sacrifice Act. The legislation, which the Senator led alongside Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), would create a new presidential award to posthumously honor law enforcement officers and other first responders killed in the line of duty. The bill now heads to President Trump's desk to be signed into law.
  • On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed Senator Cortez Masto's legislation to crack down on retail theft schemes. The Combating Organized Retail Crime Act of 2025, co-led by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), would establish a coordinated multi-agency response and create new tools to tackle evolving trends in organized retail and supply chain theft. This bill now awaits a vote in the Senate.
  • On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously passed Senator Cortez Masto's bipartisan legislation to help Tribal law enforcement track down violent criminals and search for missing children. The Tribal Warrant Fairness Act would allow the U.S. Marshals Service to assist Tribal law enforcement as it would any other law enforcement agency. The bill now awaits a vote on the floor of the Senate.

The former top law enforcement official in Nevada, Senator Cortez Masto is a leading advocate in the Senate for Nevada's police officers. Last year, Cortez Masto's bill to ensure the families of retired law enforcement officers killed as a result of their service have access to benefits was signed into law and her legislation to strengthen public safety in Indian Country passed the Senate. She is leading bipartisan legislation to combat human trafficking along America's interstates, airways, railroads, and waterways. Cortez Masto has also introduced legislation to redirect excessive funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to local law enforcement and has condemned the pardons of violent criminals who assaulted police officers on January 6th.
