Stony Brook University is expanding its EV charging infrastructure by adding eight new public dual port electric vehicle charging stations on campus, bringing the total number of stations on campus to 21.

Each station is capable of charging vehicles parked at two spaces in two public lots: Lot 2 located near the Mendelsohn quad and Lot 52 located near IDC. After this expansion, the total parking spaces devoted to EV charging will be 42.

Stony Brook is also working on implementing infrastructure for fleet vehicle charging in anticipation of an ongoing fleet electrification study in collaboration with the SBU Office of Sustainability, Electrical Department, and MAPS. These efforts will contribute to the conversion goal of a 100% of light-duty non-emergency vehicle fleets to Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035 as mandated by NYS Executive Order 22.

Mike Kelly, assistant director of utilities, shared his insight on the electrical department's contribution to the project: "The SBU electrical team is dedicated to supporting the New York State clean energy goals. Our department oversees the installation and power infrastructure for the electric vehicle charging stations and future projects, and it looks forward to a collaborative effort with all."

The Stony Brook team additionally introduced their first fully electric vehicles in lieu of this project with two Ford F-150 Lightnings. With a towing capacity of over 7,000 lbs and a 300-mile charging range, these trucks will assist in various campus operational tasks.
