BISMARCK, ND - Attorney General Drew Wrigley today issued a warning to North Dakota residents regarding new scams involving fraudulent government imposters convincing individuals to purchase and transfer gold bars as a means of purportedly safeguarding their money.

This scam uses false urgency and threats to create panic and fear that trick individuals into handing over their hard-earned money to "keep it safe." To create trust and pressure to act immediately, scammers will impersonate government agents or law enforcement and may even send false documentation to lend credence to these false statements.

When the scammers gain an individual's attention and trust, they instruct the individual to buy gold bars and hand the gold over to "a government agent" so the gold can be kept in a secure location. However, once the gold is handed over, it is never returned. "If someone tells you to move your money in this fashion to protect it, it's a scam," Wrigley said. "No real government agent will ever tell you to buy gold bars, move your money, or hand over gold or cash to someone," Wrigley warned.

Wrigley also warned that similar scams involving online investment in gold or cryptocurrency are common and on the rise. Gold scams are growing due to the high value of and demand for gold.
