MOHMS RESPONSE ON GPS TURNING AWAY PATIENTS...

The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for General Practitioners (GP) and Medical Laboratory Services that was established by the Government as part of its COVID-19 health and economic response strategy has facilitated timely access to medical care and diagnostics for eligible Fijians.

The Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development, and Statistics have in place the processes to ensure that all participating GPs and private Medical Laboratories are appropriately compensated according to the signed agreement between the Government and the contracted provider.

The majority of the contracted providers are fulfilling the provisions of the agreement and have received the due compensation after the necessary vetting process for payment claims.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (Ministry) is concerned that GPs are turning away patients who are sick and present to their clinics, because their payments are delayed. These patients require professional assessments and medical interventions, and turning patients away may result in further deterioration of their medical conditions.

The Ministry encourages the contracted GPs to refrain from such actions that can further jeopardise the health of people presenting at the GP's clinic, and to continue to liaise with the Finance Ministry for the amicable resolution of their concerns.

The Ministry acknowledges and appreciates the ongoing partnership and cooperation between the Government and the private health providers under the PPP scheme for the benefit of the people of Fiji.
