Reps. Haridopolos and McClellan Introduce Legislation to Establish National American History and Founders Month

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Haridopolos (R-FL-08) and Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (D-VA-04) introduced the bipartisan and bicameral National American History and Founders Month Act to empower Americans to be active citizens through a deeper understanding of our Nation's early history, its founders and founding ideals, and the civic duties within the American experience.

"This year, we celebrated 250 years of freedom, independence, and the enduring principles that have shaped our nation," said Congressman Haridopolos. "We are truly lucky to live in the greatest country in the world, and we must never take that blessing for granted. As a former history teacher, I know that by teaching future generations about our nation's founding and the sacrifices that made our freedoms possible, we can ensure America's remarkable story continues to inspire for generations to come."
"Our nation was established 250 years ago on the revolutionary idea that the power of government derives from the people in order to secure the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," said Congresswoman McClellan. "To ensure that all citizens can participate in our government by, of and for the people, each generation must fully understand the rich and complex history of its founding. The National American History and Founders Month Act provides an opportunity to reflect on that history and recommit to ensuring the great American experiment endures."
"This nation has lasted 250 years not because its documents are self-executing, but because in every generation enough Americans understood what they had inherited," said Dr. Jennifer London, President and Founder of NAHFMO. "I am deeply grateful to Representatives Haridopolos and McClellan for introducing this bill together, which would give National American History and Founders Month a permanent place in federal law and invite schools, families and communities to learn about the people, ideals and events that built this nation. With a companion bill already introduced in the Senate by Senators Wicker, Kaine and McCormick, and the country marking the anniversary of its founding, this is the right moment."
