The University of New Mexico's Anderson School of Management hosts the inaugural Rio Grande Research Challenge on Friday, Nov. 21, bringing the long-standing UNM-NMSU rivalry into a new arena rooted in finance, analysis and professional excellence.
The Rio Grande Research Challenge elevates the historic rivalry from the turf and the court to the podium. Student teams from each university analyze a publicly traded stock and present a professional buy, sell or hold recommendation, guided by faculty mentors. Judges evaluate both the written research report and the live presentation.
A panel of senior investment professionals from top financial institutions will evaluate the final presentations. Their expertise brings real-world expectations to the competition, reinforcing the Challenge's focus on strong analytical thinking and professional communication.
The winning team earns a traveling trophy, $2,000 in prize money, and individual awards, while the runner-up receives $1,000 and individual trophies. Beyond the prizes, the Challenge provides a high-impact experiential learning opportunity that strengthens students' analytical abilities and builds the confidence needed to present and defend ideas in front of seasoned industry professionals.
"What makes this Challenge special is the transformation we see in the students," said Professor Subramanian Iyer, faculty organizer. "They move from classroom theory to true professional practice, synthesizing complex information, making a clear call and standing behind it. That kind of experience is invaluable for anyone preparing for a career in finance."
