Building Safety Month 2026

May 1, 2026

WHEREAS, Alaskans recognize that our growth and strength depend on the safety and effectiveness of our homes, buildings, and infrastructure, in daily life and when disasters strike; and

WHEREAS, our confidence in the strength and reliability of these buildings is made possible by the dedication of building safety inspectors, fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, and others in the construction industry who work year-round to ensure the safe construction of buildings; and

WHEREAS, the International Code Council, is a nonprofit organization that brings together local, State, and Federal experts, who develop and implement the highest quality building codes to protect us in the buildings where we live, work, learn, and play; and

WHEREAS, modern building codes provide communities with economic and technological benefits and include safeguards that protect the public from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snowstorms, wildland fires, floods, and earthquakes; and

WHEREAS, Building Safety Month helps remind all Alaskans of the vital work our state and local code officials perform to ensure safe, sustainable, and affordable buildings that support our quality of life; and

WHEREAS, "Built to Last," the theme for Building Safety Month 2026, encourages all Alaskans to get involved and raise awareness about building safety on a personal, local, and global scale.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as:

Building Safety Month

in Alaska and encourage Alaskans to commit to improving building safety and economic investment at home and in the community, and to recognize the essential services provided by state and local agencies dedicated to public education and the protection of lives and property.
