Statement from Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios Regarding New Jersey's Historic Milestone in Ending Veteran Homelessness

"Today marks a historic milestone for New Jersey and a powerful affirmation of our commitment to those who served our nation. Through the Bringing Veterans Home (BVH) initiative, our state has created a coordinated support system that fully funds housing resources, so no veteran has to go homeless. On behalf of the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners, I commend Governor Mikie Sherrill, the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DVA), the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), and the countless service providers, advocates, and community partners whose unwavering commitment has made this milestone possible. Middlesex County is proud to stand alongside our state and local partners as we continue to combat homelessness.

Our veterans answered the call to serve our nation with courage, sacrifice, and selflessness. Ensuring they never have to experience homelessness is one of the most meaningful ways we can honor that service. Today's announcement demonstrates what is possible when government, nonprofits, and local communities work together toward a shared mission.

Middlesex County has long been a leader in addressing homelessness. As one of the first counties in New Jersey to establish a County Homeless Trust Fund, we remain committed to expanding housing opportunities and helping our most vulnerable residents, including veterans, find a path to permanent housing. In 2016, our Veterans Housing Assistance Program (VHAP) earned national recognition from Former First Lady Michelle Obama for helping to end veteran homelessness in Middlesex County. More recently, through the Middlesex County Housing Continuum Care Committee, in partnership with Coming Home of Middlesex County, six new housing units in New Brunswick were made available for individuals experiencing homelessness.

While today's milestone is one worth celebrating, it also serves as a reminder that our work is not finished. We look forward to the day when we can say homelessness has ended for everyone - not just because it has become rare, brief, and non-recurring, but because every person has access to safe, stable housing and the opportunity to thrive.
