Fire Prevention Week 2025 takes place from October 5 to 11 and this year's theme is Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.

Most electronics we charge at home, like cellphones, laptops, power tools and cordless vacuum cleaners, are powered by lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a lot of energy in a small place and can overheat, start a fire or explode if overcharged or damaged.

Charge into fire safety and prevent fires in your home with three steps:

Buy only safety-certified products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a mark such as UL, ETL or CSA, which means it meets safety standards.

Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don't overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it's fully charged.

Recycle batteries responsibly. Don't throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit recycleyourbatteries.ca to find a recycling spot nearby.

During Fire Prevention Week and throughout the school year, the Victoria Fire Department will be visiting local elementary schools to talk about fire safety.
