Sumitomo Chemical has launched its product Velera™, a fungicide containing the active ingredient Pavecto™ (active ingredient trademark; common name: metyltetraprole), in Paraguay in South America. This marks the Company's first time bringing to market a product containing Pavecto™ outside of Japan.
Pavecto™ is one of the active ingredients included in B2020, the Company's pipeline of products to be submitted for registration in major markets by 2020. It is expected to become a blockbuster product that will drive the growth of the Sumitomo Chemical Group's agricultural business. Through the internal and external evaluations that have been conducted to date, Pavecto™ has been confirmed to be effective against pathogens resistant to existing QoI fungicides (*1), and is expected to contribute to fungicide resistance management. In addition, based on its efficacy, Pavecto™ is the only fungicidal active ingredient positioned in Subgroup 11A (*2), which was newly established under Group 11, to which QoI fungicides belong, by the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (*3).
Velera™ is a fungicide that contains Pavecto™ as its active ingredient and has been registered for use on soybeans in Paraguay. It provides protection from major soybean diseases, including target spot, and late-season diseases such as Cercospora leaf blight, purple seed stain, and Septoria brown spot. Sumitomo Chemical believes this product will offer agricultural producers a new option for protecting crops and ensuring crop yields.
Pavecto™ and products containing it have been available in Japan since 2023. Outside Japan, Velera™ has now been launched in Paraguay. Regulatory reviews by the relevant authorities for Pavecto™ and products containing it are under way in key markets such as Brazil and Europe, as well as in other countries. Sumitomo Chemical will continue to take the necessary steps toward obtaining registrations for Pavecto™ and products containing as quickly as possible.
Sumitomo Chemical will continue to contribute to sustainable agriculture and the stable supply of food around the world. It will do so by providing innovative solutions tailored to the needs of agricultural producers.
(*1) A fungicide with a mode of action known as a quinone outside inhibitor (QoI), which suppresses fungal growth by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration in pathogens and thereby stopping energy production.
(*2) Based on Sumitomo Chemical's research as of October 2026.
(*3) An international organization that helps prevent the development of resistance to fungicides in agriculture and proposes suitable use methods.
