GW Announces Transformation of Trustworthy AI

University leaders identify faculty-driven initiative as a model for advancing interdisciplinary research under GW's new strategic framework.

The George Washington University is advancing its commitment to interdisciplinary research through a new research mission for GW'sTrustworthy AI Initiative (GW TAI), which has been identified as the first major research thrust aligned with GW's newstrategic framework.

This commitment to interdisciplinary Trustworthy AI research follows early findings from the faculty-led strategic framework working group, led by GW Law Dean Dayna Matthew and Interim Vice Provost for Research Bob Miller, on building an interdisciplinary research ecosystem, which highlighted GW TAI as a model for how the university can foster collaboration across disciplines, especially on pressing questions related to artificial intelligence (AI).

While the working group's full recommendations are still forthcoming, the early findings present a clear opportunity to build on GW's existing strengths.

Additional insight comes from the university-widemapping exercise, which is nearing completion. The effort, with widespread input received from across the university during the exercise, has identified the depth and breadth of AI-related research at GW, particularly in trustworthy AI, as well as opportunities for future growth.

To develop the next phase of GW TAI, President Ellen M. Granberg has charged Professor and GW TAI Faculty Director Zoe Szajnfarber with engaging faculty and university leaders to help define what is needed to formalize a university-wide, comprehensive Trustworthy AI research initiative at GW.

"Over the past few years, GW TAI has emerged as one of the most inspiring faculty-led efforts I have witnessed," Granberg said. "Its grassroots foundation has fostered trust, authenticity and real momentum-demonstrating the power of interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle complex challenges in AI. As we build on these strengths, the OneGW spirit will continue to propel this work forward, activating our strategic framework and shaping a future of meaningful impact for our students, our university, and the nation."

While GW TAI will play a central role in advancing interdisciplinary AI research, the university will continue to assess how best to support and coordinate all AI-related work across teaching, operations and other functions.

The expanded support of GW TAI represents an early step in implementing the university's broader strategic framework and strengthening its leadership in emerging areas of research.

"From the beginning, GW TAI has been a faculty-led effort that has grown into a dynamic community of more than 100 researchers. That collective energy, and rich interdisciplinary exchange, has already driven meaningful progress and will remain at the heart of what comes next," Szajnfarber said. "I'm excited to lead this next phase, building on that momentum to accelerate research, collaboration, and real-world impact in trustworthy AI."
