Commissioner Causey announces hiring of new chief deputy

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey named a new chief deputy commissioner to help lead the North Carolina Department of Insurance, effective Oct. 1. Chuck Myers brings an extensive combination of insurance and law enforcement experience to his new role. He will take over for Chief Deputy Commissioner Jackie Obusek, who announced her retirement after 30 years at the Department.

Myers most recently served three and one-half years as deputy commissioner for the Louisiana Department of Insurance where he oversaw the Office of Property and Casualty. He chaired the Louisiana Auto Insurance Plan and restructured the Louisiana Fortified Homes Program. He also led the Title Insurance Working Group at NAIC, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

"I believe Chuck will be a real asset to our mission at NCDOI of protecting consumers and fighting fraud," said Commissioner Causey. "His impressive insurance, accounting, law enforcement and leadership experience will make the transition of losing Jackie much smoother."

In accepting the leadership position, Myers thanked both Commissioner Causey and Obusek. "It's a big honor joining the team at NCDOI. I'm humbled by the opportunity to come to such a great place and carry forward the incredible legacy established by the Commissioner, Jackie, and the hardworking NCDOI employees. I cannot wait to get to work for the Department and the people of North Carolina."

Prior to his time in Louisiana, Myers built his expertise with insurance regulation and law enforcement roles in Virginia. He managed the Real Estate Settlement Agents Investigations Section of the Virginia Bureau of Insurance. Myers investigated a case that earned the Virginia State Police Fraud Fighters Award. The investigation led to a conviction and return of nearly $200,000 to consumers. Before that, he served as a special agent accountant for the Virginia State Police, leading complex white-collar investigations that included elected officials, financial crimes, fraud, and forensic audits. Myers directed data driven investigative strategies, documented numerous crime scenes as a certified crime scene analyst and trained law enforcement personnel.

Myers spent more than 20 years as a licensed insurance agent in Florida and Virgina. He remains a chartered property casualty underwriter, a certified fraud examiner, a senior professional insurance regulator and a sworn law enforcement officer. Myers earned a Master of Science in Risk Management Insurance from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Central Florida.
