The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) proudly congratulates two former fire explorers who have worked hard to earn permanent employment with the LACoFD.
Former Explorers Matthew Roa and Michael Servin, demonstrated their commitment to the LACoFD Explorer Program, earning certificate of completions in Community Emergency Response Team and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, participating in post meetings and monthly ride-alongs, and volunteering their time at Department and community events.
From 2022 to 2025, Department Fire Suppression Aid (FSA) Michael Servin was assigned as a LACoFD Explorer at Fire Station 116. After making great strides as an Explorer, Michael transitioned out of the Explorer Program to begin the Fire Suppression Aid Academy 92 in May of 2025, and is currently assigned to Camp 8 in Malibu.
Between joining the LACoFD and participating as an Explorer, FSA Servin also successfully completed Firefighter I training at Rio Hondo College, where he was recognized as "Top Cadet." FSA Servin credits the Explorer Program along with his advisors for helping him in his educational and career pursuits.
"The Explorer Program set a great foundation, not just for the academy, but for the job itself," said FSA Servin. "All the training and mentorship have helped me know what to expect in the tower, work through probation, and perform in good standing with my crew."
Currently, Matthew Roa is assigned to the Department's Command and Control Division as a Fire Dispatcher I. Matthew began his journey with the Department through the Explorer Program in 2024 at Post 82, officially becoming a Dispatcher in April 2025. Though his time with the Explorer Program was short, it made a lasting impact. Fire Dispatcher I Roa is also pursuing higher education as he works full-time, continuing to build on the foundation the Explorer Program afforded him.
"I am grateful for my time in the Explorer Program. It exposed me to the standards of the Department that helped me transition into this new role," said Fire Dispatcher I Roa. "The Explorer Program built a strong foundation that shaped my mindset and showed me firsthand the level of professionalism expected at the LACoFD."
Their journey from eager explorers to full-time team members is a testament to their dedication, resilience, and desire to serve the community.
The LACoFD's Fire Explorer Program is a dynamic youth program that introduces individuals 15 to 20 years of age to today's fire and emergency medical services. This program offers youth the opportunity to develop leadership skills, career readiness, and a strong sense of civic responsibility through mentorship, community service, and real-world training.
