National Assembly Deputy Speaker Ragus Meets with US Helsinki Commission Senior Policy Advisor

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marina Ragus, met today at the National Assembly with Senior Policy Advisor to the US Helsinki Commission (US Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe - CSCE), Samuel Green.

Marina Ragus informed her guest in detail about the position and continuous violation of human and civil rights of the Serbian population in Kosovo-Metohija. She reminded that the Brussels Agreement, whose guarantor is the European Union, was signed in 2013 and since then Serbia has fulfilled 90% of its obligations stipulated by the Agreement, while Pristina has not yet fulfilled a key obligation - the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, which would be a guarantee for the survival and decent life of Serbs in the area.

Ragus pointed out that constant discrimination and ethnically motivated attacks on Serbs, whose perpetrators remain undetected, are causing revolt and dissatisfaction among the Serbian population, which does not contribute to calming the situation.

She also spoke of the latest event which happened yesterday, when, in light of the start of the election campaign, seven Serbs, including women, directors of health and educational institutions, were arrested, which led to one of the largest demonstrations of Serbs in Gracanica. The National Assembly Deputy Speaker assessed that the current situation could escalate due to Pristina's unilateral actions which discriminate against the human and civil rights of the Serb population.

The representative of the US Helsinki Commission, Samuel Green, said that he was closely monitoring the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, and expressed his expectation that dialogue and normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina would continue, adding that it was important to bring the focus back to the Brussels Agreement.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker stressed that Belgrade, for its part, will do its best to continue the dialogue.

In the course of the conversation, Marina Ragus briefed the guest on the recently adopted amendments to the electoral laws, in accordance with the recommendations of the ODIHR observation mission, and discussed other topics of mutual interest, including the global security situation and energy security issues.
