Operational Performance
Heavy rain and storms across the Southwest are affecting operations on portions of the Southern Transcon. Following several weather-related service interruptions overnight, the Needles Subdivision, which runs between Needles and Barstow, California, is recovering. On the Gallup Subdivision, which runs between Belen, New Mexico, and Winslow, Arizona, trains have been operating at reduced speed under flash flood warnings. Customers moving freight through the area may see some delays as traffic flows recover.
On Tuesday, flooding caused a derailment on the El Paso Subdivision in southern New Mexico, an important route for traffic moving to and from the El Paso gateway and Mexico. BNSF crews worked diligently to clear the site and rebuild the damaged track, returning the line to service within approximately 48 hours.
Car velocity was lower than both the prior week and the prior month amid weather-related impacts across portions of the network during the reporting period. Terminal dwell improved slightly from the prior week but was higher than the prior month, while local service remained above 91% and volume stayed strong at more than 208,000 units, up from the prior week.
Service Expectations for the Week Ahead
Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected through the weekend across New Mexico and into southeastern Colorado, western Kansas and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, with localized flash flooding possible. High winds with gusts up to 60 mph are also forecast across portions of Montana, Wyoming and western North Dakota into Sunday. BNSF teams are monitoring conditions and will adjust operations as needed to support safe, reliable service.
