Shares of Coherent (COHR) climbed 13.6% on Friday, November 6, 2026, outpacing a 0.3% gain for the S&P 500. The company released no announcements, earnings reports, or regulatory filings that day, though all five companies on its Trefis peer list also traded higher. Friday's advance followed a 13.0% drop from the previous session, which occurred one day after Coherent issued its quarterly financial results on November 4. That drop came as AI optical stocks slid for a second straight session, despite strong earnings across the group. What did that report show about Coherent's business?
Coherent's Sales Growth Sped Up Again In Fiscal Q1
For its fiscal first quarter of 2027 ended September 30, 2026, Coherent reported $2.37 billion in revenue, marking a 49.9% increase from a year earlier. The pace of expansion has accelerated every quarter for a year, climbing from a 17.3% growth rate in the same quarter of fiscal 2026.
Management attributed the growth to artificial intelligence infrastructure builds across its data center and communications businesses, which accounted for 82% of revenue. During the quarter, Coherent also secured a long-term agreement with a major AI company for PhotonLink, its new optics platform for AI data centers. The contract is worth $20 billion over five years, with revenue scheduled to begin in early calendar 2028.
Preparing to meet this demand is consuming cash. Management said that capital spending reached $776 million in the quarter, compared with $104 million a year earlier. Free cash flow for the quarter was a negative $868 million.
Coherent Outpaced All Five Comparable Companies
Every company on Coherent's Trefis peer list traded higher during the same session. Lumentum rose 5.7%, while MKS logged the group's largest gain at 8.7%. MKS had just reported third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings above its own guidance on demand for semiconductor equipment and AI-related electronics manufacturing.
The broader technology sector recorded more modest gains. XLK, the SPDR fund for the technology sector, climbed 1.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.1%. Although Coherent moved in the same direction as its peer group that day, it rose further than any company on the list.
Where Does Coherent Stock Stand After Friday's Gain?
Daily advances of this magnitude are unusual for Coherent, with the stock recording three such gains in the prior 365 days. Before Friday, its most recent swing of equal or greater size in either direction occurred on August 10, 2026, when shares dropped 14.2%.
Despite Friday's rally, the shares remained down 36.2% over the past month, against a 4.9% decline for the S&P 500. Over the past year, Coherent has traded between a closing low of $135.61 on November 20, 2025, and a high of $426.89 on June 2, 2026. The stock returned 43.2% across that twelve-month period, exceeding the 9.8% gain for the S&P 500. At Friday's close, Coherent traded at 4.8 times its sales over the past twelve months, compared with 3.1 times for the S&P 500.
Coherent is expected to report its fiscal second-quarter results in February 2027, and revenue will be the measure to watch against management's guidance of $2.55 billion to $2.75 billion.
