FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUSTA, MAINE - The National Weather Service offices in Gray and Caribou report a storm system arrives early Monday, bringing blowing snow and gusty winds into Monday night, with hazardous travel conditions and low visibility in many areas. A Blizzard Warning is in effect from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM EST on Monday for Coastal Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc Counties. Large waves make coastal erosion possible on exposed low-lying shorelines and splash-over on coastal roads. Big waves and high winds will cause extremely dangerous seas. Northeast winds gusts could be upwards to 50 mph along the immediate coast and islands. Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for the Downeast and Bangor regions and Winter Storm Watches have been issued for southern Aroostook, central Penobscot, and southern Piscataquis counties. The potential for fallen tree limbs may cause power outages. By Tuesday morning, precipitation should taper off statewide, though lingering gusty winds could cause some continued blowing snow concerns in the northe
"We urge everyone to stay informed and exercise caution during this storm," said MEMA Director Pete Rogers. "Travel is discouraged. However, if travel is necessary, allow extra time, reduce your speed and have your emergency kit ready to ensure your safety and the safety of others on our roadways."
The Maine Department of Transportation (Maine DOT) reminds the public to give plow trucks plenty of room and to avoid crowding or passing working snowplows, especially during reduced visibility. The Department notes that its hundreds of snowfighters and statewide fleet of winter-maintenance equipment will be out in force throughout the storm to keep Maine's roads as safe and passable as conditions allow.
If alternative power or heat sources are needed, residents are reminded to ensure the equipment is in proper working condition, properly installed, and that you follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
