Greensboro Police Investigate Fatal Shooting; Suspect Identified

GREENSBORO, NC (August 24, 2026) - Greensboro Police are investigating a fatal shooting Sunday night and have identified a suspect.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. Sunday, GPD Officers, Greensboro Fire, Guilford County EMS, and Guilford County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a shooting on Creswell Court.

When first responders arrived, they found two victims suffering from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. One of the victims was pronounced dead on scene; She was later identified as Kathryn Binkley, 73. The other victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses identified the assailant as a neighbor, Michael Wade Hargett, 64. After the shooting, Hargett barricaded himself in a nearby residence.

The Greensboro Police Department's Special Response Team, and the Hostage Negotiation Team, responded and eventually entered the residence, locating Hargett and arresting him. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

The homicide of Ms. Binkley is the City's 16^th of 2026.

Police are not seeking any additional suspects.
