RELEASE: Senator Hassan Discusses Rising Food & Grocery Costs, Impact of Trump’s Tariffs at Portsmouth Grocery Store

PORTSMOUTH - U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan visited Richardson's Market in Portsmouth to hear from the owners of the locally owned grocery store about how President Trump's reckless tariffs and his war in Iran are raising food and grocery costs for families.

"President Trump promised to lower prices, but families across New Hampshire are paying more every time they go to the grocery store because of his reckless tariffs and illegal war with Iran," said Senator Hassan. "Now, his new tariffs on Canadian goods, as well as the across-the-board tariffs, will stretch the budgets of New Hampshire families even more. I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from the owners of Richardson's Market about how rising costs are affecting their small business and the families that they serve. While the President continues his mission to make life more expensive, I'll keep working to lower costs for Granite Staters."

Earlier this year, a Joint Economic Committee report found that families paid an average of $310 more for groceries in 2025 after President Trump took office. A new report released last week showed that New Hampshire families have had to spend $4,400 more due to inflation in Trump's second term. In addition, a new Joint Economic Committee report found that American farmers spent $1.4 billion more on diesel fuel during this year's spring planting season than they did last year, driving up production costs that are ultimately passed down to families at the grocery store.

Last week, President Trump announced new 50 percent tariffs on many Canadian goods, as well as new across-the-board tariffs on dozens of countries, which will further increase costs for New Hampshire families and businesses.
