Norton Rose Fulbright and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton score US$1.375 billion settlement in data privacy cases

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright's representation of the State of Texas in multiple data privacy lawsuits has resulted in a US$1.375 billion final settlement with Google. This settlement was reached in principle on May 9, 2025.

The firm began these cases in 2022, when the State of Texas, represented by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Norton Rose Fulbright, sued Google for tracking and collecting users' private data regarding geolocation, Incognito browsing activity, and biometric identifiers in violation of state consumer protection laws. After three years of litigation, Google agreed to address the issues and pay the State of Texas close to US$1.4 billion dollars, in one of the largest settlements in State history.

Joseph M. Graham, Jr., Norton Rose Fulbright's Houston Co-Head of Litigation and Disputes, who served as lead counsel in these cases, said:

"We are proud to have supported Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in representing the State of Texas in this important fight for Texans' data privacy rights. Our special thanks go to First Assistant AG Brent Webster, Deputy First Assistant AG Ralph Molina, Deputy AG for Civil Litigation Austin Kinghorn, and the many committed litigators in the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division."

Along with Joseph Graham, Norton Rose Fulbright's litigation team was led by Marc Collier, Julie Searle, Jeff Wolff, Chris Cooke, and Kristina Williams.
