Cybersecurity Tip of the Week: Received a Data Breach Notice? Don’t Panic – Take Action

Receiving a notice that one of your accounts was involved in a data breach can be unsettling, but it doesn't have to become a crisis.

Start by changing the password for the affected account immediately. We always recommend using a unique password for every account, but if you've reused that password elsewhere (and many people do), change it on those accounts as well.

Enable multi-factor authentication whenever it's available to provide an extra layer of protection.

Keep an eye on your financial and online accounts for suspicious activity, and be especially cautious of phishing emails or text messages that reference the breach, as cybercriminals often use these events to launch new scams.

Finally, consider using a password manager to generate and securely store unique passwords for every account. Taking a few simple steps now can help prevent a data breach from becoming identity theft.
