The City of Reno invites the community to a special town hall event for the California Avenue Mural Project, taking place on Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center.
This event offers a unique opportunity to meet the artists of ABG Art Group, who are leading the design and creation of a vibrant new mural along California Avenue. Attendees will hear directly from the artists, learn about the inspiration and vision behind the project, and participate in an open discussion to share feedback that will help shape the final mural design.
The community is also invited to participate in an online survey to share their input about the mural online. The deadline to complete the survey is September 7, 2025.
In addition, on Wednesday, August 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center, ABG Art Group will be hosting a free professional development workshop where the team will be sharing insights to help local artists navigate the public art industry. Interested artists can register online.
Background on the California Avenue Mural
In May of 2025, the Reno City Council approved a recommendation by the Public Art Committee and Reno Arts & Culture Commission to commission ABG Art Group to paint a mural along the heavily corrugated concrete retaining wall near the intersection of California and Keystone Avenues. The wall has over 1000 feet of horizontal space with varying vertical heights ranging between 3 to 18 feet. The goals for this project include highlighting the unique character of the neighborhood, increasing public art awareness, and engaging with the community to create artwork that inspires and reflects the neighborhood. To learn more about the project, visit the California Avenue Mural webpage on the City's website.
