Mescalero Man Charged with Assault and Child Abuse

ALBUQUERQUE - A Mescalero man has been charged in federal court with assault arising from an alleged February 2026 incident and prior assaults.

According to court documents, on February 25, 2026, Bradley Isaiah Davis, 36, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, allegedly assaulted the victim at his residence during an argument. Davis allegedly prevented the victim from leaving, struck them multiple times in the face with a closed fist, and strangled the victim. The victim was eventually able to leave the residence and later sought medical treatment.

Medical records showed the victim suffered a fractured nasal bone, a head contusion, facial swelling, bruising, and nosebleeds.

The investigation further revealed allegations of prior assaults and strangulation by Davis against the same victim dating back to 2023. Witnesses also reported observing one of the assaults and intervening during the attack.

During a post-arrest interview with investigators, Davis allegedly admitted to striking the victim in the face during the February 2026 incident. He also admitted to choking the victim during a 2023 assault.

Davis is charged with assault causing serious bodily injury, assault by strangling and/or suffocating and child abuse and will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled. If convicted of the current charge, Davis faces up to 13 years in prison.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison made the announcement today.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services investigated this case with assistance from the Zuni Police Department. The Las Cruces Branch Office of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico is prosecuting the case.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
