June 29, 2026 3:55 p.m.

The UTMB Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a suspect following an assault involving a security officer early Sunday morning in Galveston.

At approximately 5:58 a.m. on June 28, a UTMB employee was walking in the 600 block of Market Street when she was approached by an unknown man driving a 2010 Honda Accord with Texas license plate VFP 5124.

A uniformed UTMB security officer in the area observed the interaction and intervened, allowing the employee to leave safely. The suspect then exited his vehicle and physically assaulted the officer. After a brief struggle, the suspect returned to his vehicle and fled the scene.

Before the suspect left, the security officer photographed both the individual and the vehicle's license plate. UTMB Police later identified the suspect as Mark Anthony Johnson Jr.

UTMB Police have obtained an arrest warrant charging Johnson with assault on a security officer, a third-degree felony under Texas law. Investigators are working with law enforcement partners to locate and arrest him. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The employee was not injured, and the security officer sustained minor injuries. Police have increased patrols in the area. Anyone who sees the suspect should contact law enforcement immediately.
