Simon Anderson is a Health and Safety Business Partner supporting the Marine team at LPC.

Simon has made significant strides in enhancing safety measures at the Port. "I want to improve and support people to do their work and go home safe at the end of the day," says Simon.

Over the past 18 months, Simon has navigated the steep learning curve in the maritime space, gaining valuable insights and experience and making a difference on and off the water. "The Port is a challenging and high-risk environment for me to not only utilise my skills but also develop my skills," he adds.

The 57-strong Marine team, with two tugs and two pilot launches, supports 1,800 shipping movements in and out of Lyttelton and around the Inner Harbour and Dry Dock. "There are a whole lot of risk factors that go into how the marine operation works."

Simon's role is to identify risks and opportunities to support improving risk management within marine operations. "Our pilots, tugs and launch teams support the safe passage of ships coming in and out of Lyttelton," says Simon.

Simon has worked collaboratively with the Marine team, building trust and focusing on building relationships to better work alongside our teams."They're the experts, they know how they do their jobs, and my role is to help coach and empower them," he adds.

Simon has been involved in improvement projects such as ship lines' snapback risk mitigations, pedestrian and traffic management controls at the Dry Dock and digitising on-water permitting authority systems.

Simon's commitment to listening and learning has made a significant impact on the safety culture at LPC. "I want to support people doing their work safely."
