Pepco today launched a competitive bidding process to purchase electricity for District of Columbia customers, with the goal of securing reliable power at the lowest cost possible, inviting energy suppliers to compete to provide electricity to District of Columbia customers on Standard Offer Service (SOS). SOS is the power customers receive automatically from Pepco unless they choose a third-party supplier. Competitive bidding helps ensure these customers get a reliable power supply at a fair, market-based price.
As part of this process, electricity suppliers compete to offer their best prices to serve Pepco customers. This helps ensure that the cost of electricity for customers is a fair market-based price. With energy supply costs continuing to be a concern for many households and businesses, the competitive bidding process is an important part of how electricity prices are established for D.C. customers.
The RFP is required by the District of Columbia Public Service Commission, which oversees how Pepco buys electricity for customers to make sure the process is fair and open. It is the first step in a multi-phase bidding process that begins this month and ends with the posting of retail rates on or before March 1, 2027. Supply contracts will begin on June 1, 2027.
