CONTACT Oshi Jauco, Public Information Manager, San José Clean Energy 408-533-3764; [email protected] San José Clean Energy Launches New Rebates on EVs Biggest Savings on EVs this September SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 9, 2025) - San José Clean Energy (SJCE), the City of San José's local clean electricity provider, is offering new rebates to help residents save big on purchasing electric vehicles (EVs). These rebates can be combined with federal tax credits that expire at the end of the month, making September the best time to switch to clean, electric transportation. For qualifying San José residents, SJCE's EV Instant Rebates offers $4,000 off the purchase or lease of new EVs, or $2,000 off used EVs at participating dealerships. Customers enrolled in the California Alternate Rates for Energy Program (CARE), the Family Electric Rate Assistance Program (FERA), or Clean Cars for All are automatically eligible. Starting Oct. 1, the rebate will expand to customers earning under 100% of the Area Median Income (AMI), a standard that is set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that reflects the midpoint of household incomes in Santa Clara County. Basic requirements include: New and used battery electric vehicles only (no plug-in hybrids). Vehicle must be priced under $60,000. Must be a San José Clean Energy customer. "These offers give San José families and businesses some of the best incentives in years on EVs," said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "Many of the biggest incentives expire soon, so we encourage residents to take advantage of these limited-time deals." "Every San Joséan deserves the chance to be part of the clean energy future," said Mayor Matt Mahan. "By stacking local, state, and federal incentives, these rebates put thousands of dollars back in people's pockets while helping us build a cleaner, healthier city for the next generation." Residents who take advantage of this rebate in September will have the opportunity to save even more. SJCE also partnered with Ride & Drive Clean, a Cool the Earth program, to provide additional discounts on select new EVs, no income limits required. Customers can combine both rebates with the federal EV tax credit, which expires on Sept. 30, and receive an additional $7,500 off qualifying new EVs and $4,000 off used EVs. In total, income-qualifying residents can save over $23,000 on a new electric vehicle in September by combining the EV Instant Rebate with other available incentives. "Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in San José, and it also contributes to poor air quality that affects our most vulnerable residents," said Lori Mitchell, Director of San José Clean Energy. "By making electric vehicles more affordable, we're giving families the chance to save money while helping reduce climate pollution and protect our community from the impacts of climate-driven challenges."
