France deeply regrets the confirmation of the sentencing on appeal of the French journalist Christophe Gleizes to a seven-year prison term.
It deplores the fact that his full cooperation with the Algerian authorities and the explanations provided by his defence were not sufficient to change the verdict. We call for his release and hope for a favourable outcome so that he can quickly rejoin his loved ones.
The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has been closely following our compatriot's situation since his arrest in Algeria in May 2024, and has provided him with help and consular protection throughout his court supervision. All the services are continuing their active efforts to lend him assistance and are in regular contact with him, his loved ones and his advisers, who have been able to visit him and attended the trial.
France reiterates its commitment to press freedom worldwide.
