February 5, 2026 (PAHO/WHO) - The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with Esri, a leading company in the development of GIS software (Geographic Information Systems), held a virtual technical session aimed at strengthening countries' capacities in spatial statistics and risk modeling applied to health emergencies and disasters.

The 90-minute webinar, titled Risk Modeling Made Simple and delivered in English with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish, presented practical approaches to transform geospatial data into strategic information that supports public health decision-making. The session showcased methods to analyze and compare the characteristics of different territories, identify concentrations of vulnerability and risk, and prioritize interventions in a transparent and evidence-based manner.

The session included hands-on demonstrations in ArcGIS Pro, a geographic information system (GIS) software for advanced mapping, analysis, and data management, using tools such as Calculate Composite Index and Suitability Modeler, as well as examples of risk analysis to conduct comparative assessments and visualize results for mitigation, prevention, and response to various hazards. These tools enable the comparison of geographic areas, the identification of where the most vulnerable people or places are concentrated, and the detection of risks with greater precision.

A total of 40 participants from 16 countries- including staff from PAHO/WHO Country Offices and professionals from Ministries of Health working in health emergencies and epidemiology-took part in the session. In total, 61 professionals registered for the event.

This training is part of the Epidemic Intelligence Strategy to Strengthen Early Warning for Health Emergencies 2024-2029, supporting Line of Action 2, which focuses on the development of technical capacities.
