Councilmember Doug Stewart, City Manager Joe Irvin, former Malibu Public Works Director Rob DuBoux, representatives from LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath's office, LA County Public Works, and the Malibu Chamber of Commerce joined Southern California Edison (SCE) on June 24 to celebrate the start of the Merlin Targeted Undergrounding Project. This major investment in wildfire safety and electric reliability is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Reliable Power: Undergrounding power lines helps reduce wildfire risk while protecting the electric system from high winds and falling branches.
The project includes Corral Canyon Road, Seabreeze Drive, Vista Mar Drive, and nearby neighborhoods. SCE plans to underground at least 212 miles of overhead power lines in high-risk areas by the end of 2028.
Wildfire Safety: A stronger underground grid helps protect residents, homes, and the environment.
Emergency Preparedness: Undergrounding can reduce the need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), helping keep communications available when residents need emergency alerts, evacuation information, and contact with loved ones.
