CDOT to Begin Rehabilitation of Lake Street Bascule Bridge on October 6

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that starting Monday, October 6, 2025, construction will begin on the Lake Street Bascule Bridge over the South Branch of the Chicago River, between Canal Street and Wacker Drive. The project will rehabilitate the 109-year-old Lake Street Bridge, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital corridor for transit, roadway, sidewalk, and river traffic into Chicago's Central Business District. Construction is expected to be completed in January 2028. During this time, the bridge will be fully closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

Green and Pink Line CTA service will continue uninterrupted throughout the bridge closure, with the exception of two planned service shutdowns in Fall 2026 and Spring 2027. Additional information will be provided in advance of those service changes.

  • Westbound Lake Street: Wacker Drive to Madison Street to Jefferson Street to Lake Street
