During its second-quarter call, Vertiv (VRT) forecast third-quarter 2026 sales of $3.75 billion at the midpoint. That figure represents a 40% increase from a year earlier. The third quarter has now ended, and the company has not yet reported its results. This forecast marks a significant acceleration from the 24% sales growth recorded in the second quarter, a period when management noted that minor timing shifts delayed some sales. So why did Vertiv forecast its sales growth to jump that much?
Why Did Vertiv Forecast A Jump In Sales Growth?
Executives attributed the expected jump to faster movement on large, complex projects, the addition of new capacity, and very strong backlog coverage. The new capacity includes a site in Johor in Malaysia, alongside five large plant expansions in the Americas.
Vertiv's large projects were also behind the delays in the second quarter. The company blamed those holdups mainly on multiphase project execution and temporary supply chain congestion. These delays surfaced in the Americas, a region that brought in about 63% of second-quarter sales. Management declined to specify how much revenue moved out of the quarter.
The company is forecasting faster growth than it has delivered lately. Over each of the last four quarters, sales grew between 22.7% and 30.1% from a year earlier. On a basis that strips out acquisitions and currency effects, management forecast about 35% growth in the third quarter, compared with 18% in the second. Management forecast about 35% growth on that basis in the third quarter, compared with 18% in the second.
What Is At Stake For Vertiv Holders?
On the same call, Vertiv raised its 2026 sales forecast by $250 million, bringing the midpoint to $14 billion. If third-quarter sales fall well short of the $3.75 billion midpoint, the full-year figure is in doubt as well.
The share price is exposed too. Vertiv stock trades at 52.7 times earnings, compared with 22.5 for the S&P 500. At that valuation, the price likely assumes the company keeps growing far faster than most companies. The stock lost 22% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 gained 3.4%. Even after that fall, investors are paying for growth Vertiv has forecast but not yet delivered.
Management's Case For Its Forecast
Executives make a fair case. They noted that their second-half forecast does not assume all stars align, leaving room for imperfect progress on large projects. Management also called demand broad-based across regions and customer types, and expects another year of robust orders growth. Moreover, Vertiv beat its own guidance in the second quarter: its adjusted operating margin came in 140 basis points above the level it had guided. On October 5, 2026, Vertiv named a new executive vice president for manufacturing, logistics and operational excellence. The company stated the hire would help drive the next phase of that work.
The worry is real but measured. Customers want what Vertiv sells, and the open question is whether the company can deliver its large projects on time. At its next report, Vertiv's third-quarter sales, measured against the $3.75 billion midpoint management provided, will be the number to watch.

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
