On Sunday, Prime Minster Jonas Gahr Støre visited the US Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut. US Navy submarines play a key role in maintaining security in the High North.
'The US is Norway's most important ally, and there is close and wide-ranging defence cooperation between our two countries. This cooperation is essential for Norway's defence and for the security and defence of the US. Today, we have had constructive discussions about the security situation in Norway's neighbouring areas and maritime cooperation between Norway and the US. It is vital for our collective security that we have a common understanding of the challenges in our neighbouring areas,' said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Deterrence in the north
Prime Minister Støre was given a tour of the USS Virginia and met with the officers and crew on board. The USS Virginia is a nuclear-powered submarine designed to detect enemy submarines and carry out intelligence operations.
'The Royal Norwegian Navy and the US Navy cooperate very closely, and this cooperation has been further strengthened in recent years. US presence in the High North and Arctic region contributes to deterrence. US activity in our neighbouring areas is very important for Norway and our safety. An example is the recent visit by the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford to Norway,' said Mr Støre.
Working together
The US Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton was established in the 1800s and is known as the 'Home of the Submarine Force'. It is the homeport of the US Navy submarine fleet on the East Coast, and it is from here that the submarines and crews operating in the High North prepare for deployment.
'Today, I have heard how much the US values Norway as a partner and the importance the US attaches to joint activities in our neighbouring areas. It is clear that this collaboration is of great benefit to both parties,' said Mr Støre.
