WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) announced more than $2 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for Rutherford and Polk Counties as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program. Funding will go to the Town of Rutherfordton and the Foothills Regional Commission to support transportation safety projects.
"Keeping our roads safe for drivers, pedestrians, and first responders is a top priority, and this $2 million investment will help Rutherford and Polk Counties do exactly that," said Congressman Moore. "I appreciate the Administration and the folks at DOT for supporting these projects and for their continued commitment to Western North Carolina."
$1,707,300 will go to the Foothills Regional Commission for the Foothills Regional Automated Alert Technology Pilot Project. The project will equip emergency response and public service vehicles with digital alert technology across Polk and Rutherford Counties while informing the regional Action Plan and future deployment decisions.
$402,000 will go to the Town of Rutherfordton for the Rutherfordton Safe Streets: Greenway and Downtown Safety Demonstration Project. The project will test temporary crosswalk upgrades, speed feedback signs, rectangular rapid-flashing beacons, gateway treatments, and a post-crash care communications pilot in downtown Rutherfordton and along Green Street and U.S. 221. The project will update the Town's Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and inform future permanent safety projects.
